Flower Power

I am nuts about the flower applique shirts that are out there.  I am not nuts about the price.  $50 for a T-SHIRT???  Unless that thing cooks dinner for me and takes me to a movie, I can find better things to do with $50.  Especially because the odds are high that this said shirt will get some sort of child DNA on it whether that be pee, puke, blood, snot or drool…Oh the joys of motherhood.

So I set out to make my own!  And for CHEAP!

I bought (2) V-neck T’s at Wal-Mart for $2 each.  Yep that’s right TWO-DOLLA-BABY!  I bought one in my size and then bought a second in a XXL.  I am cutting it up so might get my money’s worth!

I started by cutting along the seams and separating the shirt.  I then cut it into 2″ strips and from the strips, I cut a bunch of these guys below.

Next I battled with that $#*$&^@ sewing machine for about 1 hour  (please omit this step if you try this at home!)

Then, I just did a gather stitch by hand.  Believe me, hand sewing this entire shirt was faster than the time it took me to battle the beast! I put two petals on top of each other and off centered

I gave them a good ‘ole gather stitch So I now have a bunch of these cute little guys.

I originally had a different lay out in mind but when I pinned them all on the shirt and then tried the shirt on, I just didn’t like the way they were placed.  I couldn’t get them in the right positions so that they weren’t like “HELLO!  HERE IS EXACTLY WHERE MY NIPPKES ARE!  IN CASE YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW!”  So after a couple of re-pins, I decided to steer in this direction.

I pinned them along the neckline, tried it on to verify they looked OK, took the shirt off and hand stitched them in place.

I had more of these cute little flowers just dying to be used, so I added a few to my left hip area at the bottom of the shirt.  Ryan is glued to my right hip so they found a happy place on my left hip 🙂

I didn’t get any of me actually wearing the shirt but it’s super cute!  You will just have to make your own or take my word for it!

I am pretty excited with my $4 shirt!  I have left over shirt material and flowers so I am sizing up just about everything in my wardrobe wondering what else I can add a bit of flower power to!

  1. I love this! It turned out so cute. I might have to try this for myself when I get some of the other projects checked off my list. You could also try doing a row straight down the front of the shirt. i bet that would look super cute also!

  2. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while too! Thanks for the great tutorial, looking forward to seeing how mine turn out too! 🙂

By the way, I’m following now too. 🙂

  3. What an adorable refashion! I love that you added a little cluster of flowers at the bottom of the shirt too 🙂 Great transformation!

I am hosting a new linky party that is all about DIY fashion and this would be the PERFECT project to link up to DIY Diva Thursdays. Would love to have you over!

  4. Hey Che!
I love your Flower Power creation. It turned out so darned cute. I do sew and always looking for ways to make things easier…I will have to give this a try. I bought Tee’s at Joannn’s recently on sale to cut up and make a Tee shirt cover for my Cricut. Tee’s are a wonderful base.
Thanks for the inspiration. Really like your style.
