No Sew Infant/Newborn Tutu

In honor of a friend’s new baby girl, I made a new baby girl tutu!  My plans for this infant tutu vary from when I made my toddler/little lady tutu here. New babies lie around in a swing or bouncy or in someones arms most of the day!  I know?  Who would have thought!  Who wants to sleep on a pound of tulle smooshed up behind them?  Since newborns also don’t move much on their own, the elastic used before seemed a bit overkill for a mostly stationary little person.  I used a pretty pink ribbon in place of the elastic and also attached the tulle pieces a bit differently on this one.

Items Needed:

    • 1 yard of tulle
    • ribbon.  (I chose the polyester type versus the silky kind)
    • scissors

Taking your yard of tulle, keep it folded how it was on the bolt.  Then fold the  yard of tulle in half and then in half again.  Cut all folds.  Next cut strips about 3-4 inches wide.  So you should now have strips that are almost 12 inches or so long and 3-4 inches wide.

Next, I dug out one of Ryan’s Newborn Onesies and used that to measure the amount of ribbon I would need.  I tied a knot in the ribbon on each end, marking where the tulle would be and also being sure to leave plenty of extra ribbon to tie into a pretty bow around that tiny little babycakes!

Next I started adding the tulle.  I used a pull through knot this time versus tying them like I did on the elastic.  The reason is that when you tie the tulle around the ribbon, the ribbon collapses and then you have a tail of tulle on both sides of the ribbon.  Once you wrap that around a baby belly, the tutu would look funny being on top and bottom of the ribbon.  I used the pull through knot so that both tails of the tulle would end up on the same side of the ribbon, creating a poofy, tutu look.  On the first and last strip of tulle I tied those in a knot so that they wouldn’t slip over the knots in the ribbon.

Start by folding the strip of tulle in half, placing the center behind the ribbon like this:

Pull the loop over the top of the ribbon and push through both tails of the tulle like this:

Next pull taught.  Don’t pull it crazy tight!

And after all the tulle strips are tied, you have this, where all the tulle is on the under side of the ribbon.

Now just add your cute little girl full of sugar and spice and enjoy her tutu’ed cuteness 🙂  You can tie the ribbon towards her back when she is sleeping on her back, and you can tie the ribbon towards her belly for a perfect photo oppotunity of her sleeping on her belly.  She will have a cute poofy tutu booty!

  1. Thanks for the simple and easy to follow tutorial. Didn’t know the tutus can be made so easily (they are expensive out there at the store). Guess I should give it a try and make one for my baby girl. I’m sure she’ll love these.

Thanks for reading what {Che} said! Now tell me what {You} would like to say! I appreciate your comments and read each and every one of them! These *might* be the highlight in my day!
